Know Your System
Supply Lines and Waste Lines Are Two Different Systems
People say “water line” and “sewer line” in the same breath, but they are opposite systems with opposite jobs — and confusing them leads to the wrong service call.
Water supply lines— this page — bring clean, pressurized water intointothe building: from the county main, through the meter, along your private line — or from your well head, through the buried yard line and pressure tank — and through the pipes inside your walls to every faucet and fixture. Problems here show up as leaks, pressure loss, discolored water, a pump that cycles too often, or an unexplained spike in the water bill.
Drain and sewer lines carry wastewater outof the building by gravity. Its problems announce themselves as slow drains, gurgling, and backups. If that is what you are seeing, you wantsewer line repair or drain cleaning — not this page.
The practical test is simple: if water is appearing where it shouldn’t (a leak, a wet spot, a hissing pipe, a restless pump), you are in supply-line territory. If water refuses to leave where it should (a drain that won’t empty), you are in drainage territory. Describing it that way on the call gets you to the right diagnosis faster.
