Immediate Help
What to Do Right Now
A water heater problem is frustrating, but a few quick steps can keep everyone safe until help arrives.
If water is spreading from the unit, close the cold-water shutoff valve feeding the heater, if you can reach it safely — usually a lever or wheel on the pipe entering the tank’s top. Keep clear of standing water anywhere near electrical outlets, and never put a hand on a wet electric water heater or its wiring.
For a gas unit, a smell of gas changes the order entirely: leave the area and contact your gas utility or emergency services first — then call a plumber once it is safe. And do not keep relighting a pilot that keeps dying; that pattern is a fault asking for professional attention, not persistence.
Leave access panels and internal repairs alone. A water heater concentrates water, pressure, and heat — often gas or high-voltage electricity as well. One wrong move can produce burns, flooding, or worse.
